Want to start impressing your guests before your big day? Be inspired by the latest unique trends in wedding invitations.

Start with beautiful, handmade paper

Wedding invitations have come a long way since the plain cardstock we once expected to get in the mail. These days, paper features all types and textures, from chiffons and foil patterns, to delicate felt and silk thread, satin and velvet and divine embossed font. Your wedding invites will stand out with exquisite details such as coffee grinds or chilli, rose petals - whatever your dream invitation, it’s possible to create it with handmade paper.

Decide on the colour theme

In the same way that wedding dresses are now every colour of the rainbow, no longer do wedding invitations have to be white, cream or ivory. Contemporary designs now feature silver, gold, pink, aqua and lavender, with coloured inks such as green ink on gold paper being a current favourite. Another trend is to match the colour of your invitations with your wedding colour theme and flowers.

Break out of the box

Want to make sure your invitation really catches your friend’s eyes? Avoid the old-fashioned 5 inch square shape and try a tall, vertical rectangle, or even a heart shape.

Modernise your font

Although ornate, cursive fonts have been in vogue for wedding invitations for years for their elegance, many brides are now choosing clean, modern fonts to suit their invitation’s contemporary colours and paper. One small tip with choosing fonts – limit it to only two.

Personalise the wording

Is there a particular quote, poem or song that really sums up the love between you and your fiancé? Why not add the text to your invitation to make it even more romantic.

Make delivery fun and unique

Think the only way to send out an invitation is in an envelope? You’d be forgiven for thinking so, but these days your guests can expect the unexpected. Why not turn your invitation into a video and personally invite each guest? How about turning it into a fridge magnet or puzzle? Some brides are taking delivery one step further, with invitations delivered in the form of a message in a bottle, complete with sand and shells. Be creative and you’ll only be limited by your imagination (and an image search on Google!)

Create your own for a true style reflection

With the rise of DIY, it’s now so easy to create the invitations of your dream at home. Paper, twine, ribbon, stamps, confetti and more are easy to combine to make a personalised invitation.
